Austrian Supreme Court: hotel liable for theft from safe in hotel room

The plaintiffs (a German couple) sued a Vienna 4 star hotel company for compensation of more than EUR 160.000 of valuables stolen from the safe in their hotel room. When they had asked at the reception where to keep their valuables, the receptionist had told them to use the safe in their room. This safe had to be locked and unlocked by a code of four numbers chosen by the plaintiffs. However, the safe could also be opened by using a 'mastercode'.

Austria: hotel operator not liable for injury of a guest who tried to repair a jamming glass door

The plaintiff who was a former share holder of a hotel company (the defendant) and also the former companion of the defendant's director stayed in the defendant's hotel as a guest, when the director asked him to do her the favour to look for a jamming glass door in the indoor pool area because she couldn't reach any craftsman. When he tried to remove the defective glass door, he got severely injured on his right hand. He sued the hotel company for compensation for pain and suffering. The court of first instance granted the claim.

2010 safety statistics shed a positive light on European aviation

In its recently published Annual Safety Review, EASA confirms that 2010 is "the first year that no fatal accident in commercial air transport operations occurred in the history of aviation in Europe both for helicopter and aeroplane operations". In global terms, the accident rate in aviation has been declining steadily ever since the 1950s.

EU: Commission updates list of air carriers subject to an operating ban

The European Commission has adopted the 17th update of the list of airlines banned in the European Union. Some airlines – including four all-cargo air carriers from Indonesia and one air carrier from Ukraine – have been removed from the list as safety concerns have been satisfactorily addressed.

Egypt: Minister of Tourism initiates new tourism campaign

After the civil unrest, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism Mounir Fakhry Abdelnour is launching a campaign to bring tourists back to Egypt. The ministry plans to make use of the power of modern communication technology and online and social media to spread the message that Egypt is a safe and secured tourist destination.

A number of European countries have already reduced their travel warnings.

Local authorization for Cruize stop off in island is denied by the Municipality on Carnival days.

The municipality of Ilhabela, on the northern coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil, did not allow the passengers of the Cruise "MSC Sinfonia", visit the island in the days of Carnival. The reason that moved the administrative act of the Tourism Department, is overcrowding. According to the Secretary Djane Vitoriano "Ilhabela receives other three Cruises together that represent 11,315 passengers and 2,411 crew members - the island has  infrastructure to receive up to three Cruises a day."

IATA publishes 2010 Aviation Safety Performance report - lowest accident rate in history

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced the aviation safety performance for 2010 showing that the year’s accident rate for Western-built jet aircraft as the lowest in aviation history.  The 2010 global accident rate (measured in hull losses per million flights of Western-built jet aircraft) was 0.61. That is equal to one accident for every 1.6 million flights. This is a significant improvement of the 0.71 rate recorded in 2009 (one accident for 1.4 million flights).

USA: reasonable standard of care applies on pilot decisions to disembark passengers under Tokyo Convention

On September 29, 2003, a group of Egyptian businessmen, their wives and a Brazilian fiancée, boarded Alaska Airlines Flight 694 in Vancouver, British Columbia.The nine plaintiffs took up all but three of the first class seats. According to an American passenger who sat next ot one of the plaintiffs, the flight attendants treated the Egyptians badly. She saw no sign that any person in the first class section was drunk, nor did she  observe any misconduct of any kind on the part of the passengers.

Caribbean: hurricane season over

The active 2010 Atlantic hurricane which produced 19 named storms (tied for third with 1995 and 1887), 12 of which became hurricanes ended Tuesday. While the U.S. was spared but other destinations were hit severely, including St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Barbados. Only 1933 (21 storms) and 2005 (a record 28 storms) seasons were more active.
